Supermicro nearly quadrupled sales, yet its operations used cash
On November 3, 2026, Supermicro reported net sales of 19.9 billion dollars for the quarter to September 30, against 5.0 billion a year earlier. The same release shows its operations used 434 million dollars of cash. The company calls every number in it preliminary and unaudited. It says it gave estimates because its closing for the quarter was not complete.

Supermicro builds servers and data centre systems, including for AI. On November 3, 2026, it reported net sales of 19.9 billion dollars for its fiscal first quarter, the three months to September 30. A year earlier the figure was 5.0 billion. By my arithmetic that is 3.98 times as much, a rise of about 298%. The 19.9 billion is above the 18.5 to 19.5 billion range the company had estimated on October 20.
The release also shows where the growth tied up cash. Operations used 434 million dollars of cash in the quarter, while net income was 1.59 billion. A year earlier, operations used 917.5 million dollars on far smaller sales. Gross margin was 12.7%, down from 17.5% the quarter before and up from 9.3% a year earlier. The company had guided to 10.4% to 10.8% for this quarter. The company calls the figures preliminary, and says its auditor "has not audited, reviewed, compiled or performed any procedures" on them. My reading: the growth is large, the quarter used cash, and the final numbers are not filed yet.

전체 이야기
Super Micro Computer, Inc., known as Supermicro, designs and builds servers, storage and networking systems. Its fiscal year ends on June 30. On November 3, 2026, it filed a Form 8-K with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), with its quarterly results release attached. I read both. I also read the October 20 preliminary update and the August 11 results that set the earlier guidance. I also read parts of its annual report for the year to June 30, 2026. Everything below comes from those five documents unless I say it is my reading.
The sales number tops what was flagged
The income statement shows net sales of 19,945,832 thousand dollars, against 5,017,790 thousand a year earlier. By my arithmetic that is a rise of 297.5%. Against the previous quarter's 11.1 billion, it is about 80% more.
The size of the quarter had been flagged. In August, Supermicro guided to 14.5 to 15.5 billion dollars for this quarter. On October 20, it said revenue was estimated at 18.5 to 19.5 billion, "primarily due to increased demand for AI platforms". The final figure lands just above the top of that range. Gross margin, 12.7%, is also above the October estimate of 12.0% to 12.5%.
Where the cash went
Net income was 1,594 million dollars. Yet net cash used in operating activities was 434.0 million. In the cash flow statement, three lines explain most of the gap.
| Change in the quarter | Million dollars | Effect on cash |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts receivable | 3,559.8 more | used |
| Inventories | 2,477.4 more | used |
| Deferred revenue | 3,053.7 more | brought in |
In my words, accounts receivable is money customers owe for goods already billed. Inventories are parts and systems bought or built but not yet sold. Deferred revenue is money billed or received for products not yet delivered.
The year-ago quarter used even more cash, 917.5 million, on far smaller sales. The quarter to June 30, 2026 provided 747 million. Cash and cash equivalents fell to 6.9 billion dollars, against 8.6 billion of bank debt and convertible notes.
My reading: when sales grow this fast, parts and money owed by customers grow with them, and cash lags behind profit. This quarter shows that pattern. One quarter does not show whether it lasts.
Margins went down from June
Gross margin was 12.7%, against 17.5% in the quarter to June 30 and 9.3% a year earlier. The June figure was itself far above the quarters around it. Supermicro reported it as 17.5% against 9.9% in the quarter before. Its own guidance of 10.4% to 10.8% had already expected a fall from June. On October 20, it said the margin would beat that guidance "primarily due to customer and product mix". In my words, gross margin is the share of sales left after the direct cost of the goods.
Preliminary, in the company's words
The release says Supermicro "has provided preliminary estimates of financial results primarily because its financial closing procedures for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 are not yet complete". It adds that "the actual results may differ materially from these preliminary estimated data". The auditor has performed no procedures on them. The August release used the same kind of wording for the year to June 30, 2026. That release also warned that a board review of "certain transactions in connection with export-control issues" could affect those preliminary results. The annual report says that investigation was completed and found "no basis for concluding that the Company's previously issued financial statements could not be relied upon" on the matters it reviewed. The same report describes subpoenas and inquiries from US and foreign authorities on export matters. It says the company has not been informed that it is the target of them.
The annual report Supermicro filed on August 31, 2026 also says its internal control over financial reporting was not effective as of June 30, 2026, because of one material weakness in information technology controls. It says it remediated three material weaknesses reported a year earlier, and is still working on this one. Management also concluded that the annual financial statements "fairly present, in all material respects" its results. In my words, internal control over financial reporting is the set of checks that keeps the books accurate.
When I checked Supermicro's filing list on EDGAR on November 4, 2026 at 08:32 UTC, there was no quarterly report on Form 10-Q for the September quarter yet.
The outlook
For the quarter to December 31, Supermicro expects net sales of 19.5 to 21.5 billion dollars. For the full year to June 30, 2027, it now expects 72.0 to 82.0 billion. In August it expected 65.0 to 72.0 billion, so the bottom of the new range is the top of the old one. By my arithmetic, the first quarter plus the December guidance comes to 39.4 to 41.4 billion. The full-year range would then leave 30.6 to 42.6 billion for January to June 2027. That is 15.3 to 21.3 billion a quarter, against 19.9 billion in the quarter just reported.
These are forecasts. The release lists risks, among them that "our customer base may become more concentrated, our cost of sales may increase, our margins may be lower".
What I could not check
- The final numbers. Every figure here is preliminary until the quarterly report is filed.
- Who the customers are. The release names none and gives no share of sales by customer.
- Why the margin fell from June. The release gives no reason. The only reason on record, "customer and product mix", explains the beat against guidance.
- The call. I did not listen to the November 3 webcast. Nothing said there is in this piece.
