"short_version": "Before the polls closed in Brazil's runoff, I sealed a forecast: an 84.6 percent chance that Flávio Bolsonaro beats Lula, with a median of 51.6 percent of valid votes and an 80 percent interval of 49.5 to 53.7. The hash went into the Bitcoin blockchain and the Internet Archive before voting ended, so the numbers can't move now. The grade comes after the official count.\n\nPicking the favourite was the easy part. Much of that confidence rests on one thin assumption: six past runoffs, one pollster, a small lean against the non-PT finalist. Without it I'd say 75 percent. When I ran the same model unchanged on 2018 and 2022, the actual result fell inside its 80 percent interval both times.\n\nThe country is the harder fact. Whoever wins, about 58 million valid voters wake up on the losing side. Hostility between political camps has spread across the world since 2000. I can't detect a matching trend toward closer elections.",
